Last fall, a wellness grant was submitted on behalf of MPTS for funding a wellness program and guess what? WE GOT IT! Fit to Learn is the program that was submitted and approved for funding, but what is it?

Fit to Learn is a monthly Student Fitness Education Program which gives students the tools they need to make healthy lifestyle choices through targeted lesson initiatives & creative incentives. The primary objective of this youth targeted health education program is to have our students “Make Good Health a Habit for Life”, so they become “Healthy Children & Ready Learners”. This year, it will kick off Monday, October 3rd, 2011 with the resumption of the Lean Team, a before school walking club that will meet at the MPTS field track every Monday and Wednesday from 8am to 8:45am.

Who will be served by the Fit to Learn Program?

The MPTS Fit to Learn Wellness Program will serve our entire school population of students, staff and families. Research has found that kids who eat well and are active are better equipped to do well in school including improved test scores and attention. They come to school on time, focused and ready to learn. Children who adopt healthy lifestyles value good health and tend to make positive health choices into their teenage and adult years.

Why implement a wellness program?

•More than 1 in every 3 children in NC is overweight or obese and North Carolina ranks 14th in the country for childhood obesity.
•Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight and obese adults. This increases to 80% if at least one parent is overweight or obese.
•Obese children have a greater risk of social and psychological problems such as discrimination and poor self-esteem

Youth receiving additional physical activity tend to show improved attributes such as:

•increased brain function and nourishment
•higher energy/concentration levels
•changes in body build affecting self esteem
•increased self-esteem
•better behavior which may support cognitive learning.

Fit to Learn will build on this premise by initiating and maintaining a wellness program that teaches and supports healthy life-style choices
for students, parents and staff.

Click here for more information on the Lean Team. Please fill out the lean team registration form and the liability waiver to get started, and just bring them into the office (there will be a box on the counter) or to the first day your child participates in the Lean Team. Participation is free, but these two forms are required and no child will be permitted to join without parental permission and signed agreement of the liability waiver.
