Accelerated Reader 2013-14
AR Renaissance Learning is a reading incentive program for our 1st through 5th grade students. The purpose of this reading program is to motivate students to read a variety of developmentally appropriate books and to improve their reading skills. Please note that 1st grade students will begin AR in January with more details to follow. For all students that achieve their AR goals set by their teacher, fun celebrations will be provided shortly after the end of each period.

Timeline:

  • First AR Period: Monday 9/30/2013 – Friday 12/20/2013. 2nd through 5th grades will participate in the first AR period. Some 4th grade classes have chosen not to participate.
  • Second AR Period: Wednesday 1/6/2014 – Friday 3/7/2014. 1st grade will begin taking AR quizzes during the second AR period. 5th grade will no longer participate
  • Third AR Period: Monday 3/10/2014 – Friday 5/16/2014. Final AR period for 1st through 4th grades.

How it Works:
  • Student takes the STAR READER diagnostic test to determine their reading range (recommended independent reading level).
  • Teacher sets an individual point goal which is based on the student's reading level.
  • Student selects a book within their range and reads it.
  • Student takes corresponding AR Quiz on a computer at MPTS.
  • Student receives a score and earns points based on the number of questions answered correctly.
  • Student records the information on their individual AR Reading Log.
  • Student's goal is to meet their point goal and have a test average of 85% or higher.

Monitoring Your Child’s Progress:
· Renaissance Home Connect allows both parents and students to check overall progress and see scores earned.
· Parents can also identify up to six email addresses to receive automatic updates on student reading progress.
· Log in to Home Connect. The user name is the student's CMS ID # and the password is the student's birth date – YYMMDD (please note order). Your child will have the CMS ID number on his/her AR sheet, or they may have it memorized.
What Can Parents Do?
  • Monitor your child's AR participation via Renaissance Home Connect – see above.
  • Access http://www.arbookfind.com/ to search for AR quizzes.
  • Ask your child about his/her progress towards AR goal.
  • Read daily with your child.
  • Visit your local public library with your child.
  • Encourage your child to read a minimum of 20 minutes every day.
If you visit our Media Center, you will notice colored dots on the spines of many of our books. These colored dots are a quick way for students to determine the AR level of a book.
The dot code is:
  • 0.1-0.9 - Dark Green
  • 1.0-1.9 - Yellow
  • 2.0-2.9 - Light Green
  • 3.0-3.9 - Orange
  • 4.0-4.9 - Red
  • 5.0-5.9 - Blue
  • 6.0 + White
